Artist Statement
In April 2024, LuAnn Lamie spent a week at Penland School of Craft, just north of beautiful Asheville, North Carolina. Upon returning home, she started experimenting with paper casting using locally sourced materials. The castings were created using Twin Rocker paper pulp pressed into clay molds. Fiber-reactive dyes added subtle colors to the wet pulp. Embellishments, rich colors, and marks were then added when the paper was dry. The process of paper making and book arts guided the structure of this body of work. She expanded the work to include the use of clay as well.
The theme for this series of work is Bags, Pouches and Purses. These are accessories that people use to carry or transport precious treasures, both large and small. Lamie enhanced her aesthetic with suggestions of fossils and stones found in nature.
“Light as a feather, stiff as a board” is a pertinent quote by her Penland instructor, SR Lejeune.
